We didn't want to leave because we thought - well, we could make more money and/or enjoy the sun and relax for a few more hours but Zion was calling our names. We drove 100 miles and realized Zion was another 32 miles off the highway but we couldn't skip it. The town was really charming and the park (another -$25 from my $90 park pass) was filled with peak fall colors. Like any good park you need to go deep to really experience it's true beauty but we waited near the Virgin river because like 10 other photographers hoped the sunset looked promising.
The shortened fall days are not on our side as the sun now sets just after 5pm and doesn't leave much time to dig deep into the parks. We waited and waited for a colorful sky and we didn't see much but the light leaving us and decided it was just too late to get back on the road. We headed into the nearby town for dinner at Switchback Grille where we were very disappointed with our meal and didn't even bother to order dessert (which is abnormal for these 2 chocolate-lovers). We headed back to out little motel with a great view of the peaks and planned on an early morning hike.
We woke up early to hike a short trail to the emerald pools which were not that impressive (again, one needs to go deep into the park to experience the wonders). I was dying to get on my bike and ride the bike tail so I geared up and Mac ran along side with Kaya. Nothing like tiring her out for a long drive to Wyoming. We made it to Jackson, WY to find out our favorite spot Teton Thai was closed but found a great motel with a $49, yes $49 rate and enjoyed a tasty dinner next door at The Blue Lion (random find) of elk and lamb.
I have got to get some sleep tonight! Kaya thinks we are at a constant slumber party and loves to snuggle in between us all night long. I guess we could put her in her travel tent/crate but it seems so cruel since we are on vacation and all. Mac will comment next and photos to follow...
